IPTV sound with no picture usually means the audio stream is working but the video cannot be decoded or displayed. The fastest way to find the cause is to check whether the black screen appears only in one channel, only in one app, or across the entire streaming device.
Do not start by changing your broadband package or buying a VPN. A black screen with continuing audio is more often linked to the video format, the IPTV player, HDMI handshake, device power or the TV input.
First, identify where the picture disappears
Press Home on your streaming device's remote.
- If the home screen is also black, the problem is probably the TV, HDMI connection, power supply or streaming device.
- If the home screen is visible but the IPTV app is black, focus on the app, playback engine, channel stream or video-decoding settings.
- If only one channel is affected, the stream itself may be incompatible, damaged or temporarily unavailable.
- If every channel in one playlist is affected but another playlist works, the problem is unlikely to be your television.
This simple test prevents you from changing several settings at once and losing track of what fixed the issue.
Restart the whole playback chain
Close the IPTV player, switch the TV off and unplug both the television and streaming device from the mains. Leave them disconnected briefly, then reconnect the TV first and the streaming device second.
If you use a soundbar, AV receiver, HDMI switch or capture device, temporarily remove it from the chain. Connect the streaming device directly to the television and test again. Google's guidance for a TV showing no signal or a black screen recommends checking the connection and removing intermediary HDMI equipment when investigating this type of problem.
A normal standby restart is not always enough. Unplugging the device forces the HDMI connection and video output to be negotiated again.
Check the TV input and HDMI connection
Select the HDMI input that the streaming device is actually connected to. If the TV shows its own menus but not the streaming picture, try these checks:
- Remove and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Try another HDMI input on the TV.
- If possible, test with another HDMI cable.
- Remove any HDMI splitter, switch, receiver or soundbar temporarily.
- Test the streaming device on another TV if one is available.
A wrong input or loose connection can produce a black screen even though the device is still running and audio is being sent successfully.
If the picture works when the device is connected directly to the TV but disappears when routed through a soundbar or receiver, the problem is probably the HDMI path or an HDCP compatibility issue rather than IPTV itself.
Test another app before changing IPTV settings
Open a legal streaming app such as BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, My5 or YouTube on the same device. You do not need to play the same programme; the purpose is to check whether the device can display video normally.
- Other apps also show a black screen: investigate the device, HDMI connection, TV input, power or display settings.
- Other apps work normally: investigate the IPTV player, playlist or particular channel.
- Only one channel is black: try several unrelated channels before changing the device.

Change the IPTV player's playback engine
Many IPTV players can use more than one playback method. The exact labels vary, but you may see options such as:
- Native player
- Hardware decoding
- Software decoding
- ExoPlayer
- VLC
- MX Player
A stream can deliver audio correctly while the selected video decoder fails with a particular codec, frame rate, resolution or HDR format. Switching playback engine is therefore one of the most useful fixes when menus and other apps display correctly.
Try the following order:
- Change from hardware decoding to software decoding.
- If that fails, try the app's alternative built-in player.
- If the app supports an external player, test VLC or another reputable player installed from an official source.
- Restart the channel after each change rather than leaving the stream running.
Software decoding may use more processing power, so it can introduce stuttering on weaker devices. If it restores the picture but performance becomes poor, the device may not have enough capacity for that stream.
For Kodi users, the issue may be inside the selected PVR or video-player configuration rather than the playlist itself. Our guide to using Kodi for IPTV legally covers the relevant setup choices without relying on unlicensed add-ons.
Lower the device's video output temporarily
Some televisions and streaming devices fail to agree on a suitable output mode after an update, a cable change or a switch between HDR and standard content. If the device's settings are still visible, temporarily select a simpler output such as 1080p, or use Auto if that is available.
Also test with HDR or advanced colour settings disabled temporarily. This is a diagnostic step, not necessarily the best permanent picture setting.
If the black screen appears only on high-resolution or HDR channels while standard-definition channels work, the device may be struggling with the stream's format or the HDMI path may not support the required signal. A 4K television does not guarantee that every IPTV stream is delivered in 4K or decoded correctly; stream bitrate and encoding still matter. See why IPTV can look poor on a 4K TV for the difference between the TV's panel and the source video.
Check power, heat and available storage
A streaming stick or Android TV box can remain responsive enough to output audio while video decoding has failed. Check that:
- The device is using its proper power adapter rather than an underpowered TV USB port.
- The device is not unusually hot or enclosed behind the television.
- The device has free storage available.
- The IPTV app and device software are up to date.
- You have not left several demanding apps running in the background.
Google's troubleshooting guidance for an unresponsive Google TV device includes a full power restart and checking app and system updates.
On a Fire TV, Android TV or Google TV device, open the app settings and clear the IPTV app's cache if that option is available. Clear the cache first rather than deleting app data, because deleting data may remove your login details, playlists and preferences.
Try a different channel or playlist format
If the black screen affects only particular channels, compare:
- A live channel with a video-on-demand title.
- A standard-definition channel with an HD or 4K channel.
- A channel from a different group or playlist.
- The same legal service in its official app, if one exists.
A single stream may use a codec or format that your app does not handle properly. If the service supplies an M3U playlist, avoid editing it while troubleshooting and keep a backup of the original details. Our M3U playlist guide explains the difference between playlist data and the player that displays it.
If a provider supplies only a channel list with no useful support, programme information or clear lawful source for the content, treat that as a service-side problem rather than trying to bypass it. IPTV technology is legal, but the service supplying the channels must also have the necessary rights. See is IPTV legal in the UK? for the distinction.
When the problem is probably the TV
The IPTV device is less likely to be at fault if:
- The TV's own menus flicker, disappear or remain black.
- Several HDMI devices show the same problem.
- The screen stays black even when the streaming device is disconnected.
- The TV produces sound but cannot display its own settings or input labels.
At that point, test the TV's built-in apps or another source. If those also fail, consult the television manufacturer's support documentation rather than reinstalling IPTV apps repeatedly.
The quickest fix by symptom
Black screen on every app: check the TV input, HDMI cable, power supply and device output resolution.
Black screen only in the IPTV app: restart the app, clear its cache, update it and change the playback engine.
Black screen on one channel: test other channels; the individual stream may be unavailable or incompatible.
Black screen after adding a soundbar or receiver: connect the streaming device directly to the TV and test the HDMI path.
Black screen only on HD, 4K or HDR channels: lower the output resolution temporarily and test a simpler stream.
Picture returns briefly, then disappears: check device power, heat, available storage and software updates.
If the issue continues after these tests, record the exact pattern: the device model, TV model, IPTV app, affected channels, whether other apps work and whether direct HDMI fixes it. That information will tell a legitimate service or device manufacturer far more than simply reporting that “IPTV is down”.
